Have you ever felt like you were getting your head smashed in? The pressures of life can make us all feel that way from time to time, even when you are on vacation.
Choosing to be gypsy RVers and go where the wind blows from time to time puts you in a situation where you need to improvise for a place to set up camp for the night. The idea that we landed in the Calgary area around one of their biggest events of the year, maybe the decade and the fact that it was also Canada Day weekend made for an interesting first day north of the border.
As the rig was pointed towards Calgary, I really hadn't explained to Connie that I had no idea where we were going to set up for the night. (Did I mention this Gypsy lifestyle is not right inside her comfort zone?) So that added bit of information added a little to the idea that I felt a little pressure. But I found a little campground situated about half way between Banff National Park and the border and thought I would give them a shot.
"Sorry, we're full. It's a long weekend, and Canada Day weekend." "Do you know of anywhere along the way I might find a campsite?" "We do have overflow camping, there is no electricity or water." "That's ok, we just need a place to sleep!" BINGO!!
The folks at Buffalo Plains RV Park couldn't have been nicer and the view of the Head-Smashed-In Buffalo Jump was directly out the windshield. Evidently, a young warrior wanted to prove himself worthy and decided to stand under the cliff as the rest of the Natives chased the buffalo over the cliff. The legend goes on that the hunt that day was so prosperous that the buffaloes piled up and ultimately rolled over on the young warrior and smashed his head in.
The view and feel of the place was amazing. We had a great visit! That is until I thought I got my head smashed in. You see the fellow that trained us to RV said not to park on grass and particularly not in the rain. Guess what started happening at about 2:30am? You got it! Then about 6am our carbon monoxide alarm went off and woke all of creation. Needless to say, it was time to break camp.
As we got the RV situated, we fired up the diesel and took a good hard look at the leveler panel. A drum roll would not do the anticipation justice. Would the levelers lift? The immediate answer was NO! My blood pressure had to increase as I said a quick prayer and then they lifted. My head was not smashed in!!
